Mari followed her heart

Mari found love and moved with Tomas to Sweden.
"We met at a party in Osaka when Tomas was a visiting student in Japan studying industrial engineering and management. Tomas was obliged to go back to Sweden alone but we felt that we wanted to live together and now we are engaged. We could both consider living in Japan, Sweden or some other EU country. Our choice was Sweden because we wanted to live in a secure country and, in addition, Tomas has his family here. So I got in touch with the Swedish Embassy in Tokyo and applied for a permit to move to Sweden as a close relative of Tomas."

"We have now lived here for almost three years. Since it is difficult for me to find a job in Sweden and Tomas' Japanese is better than my Swedish, we may move back to Japan one day," says Mari.
44,934 people applied for a residence permit to move to a close relative in Sweden in 2010. In all, 24.076 people were granted residence permits during the year.

Facts
