Moving to an EU/EEA citizen

If you are a relative of an EU/EEA citizen with right of residence and you are an EU/EEA citizen you have the right of residence in Sweden. If you would like to stay longer than three months, you have to register with the Swedish Migration Board. Swedish citizens are not regarded as EU/EEA citizens in this context.
On entering Sweden you need a valid passport or an identity card proving your citizenship.

Family members included


Family members to an EU/EEA citizen who is an employee, self-employed person, a provider of services, a student or a person who has sufficient funds to support himself/herself, have the right of residence in Sweden.
 
Family members include:
  • husband, wife, registered partner or common law spouse
  • children under the age of 21 or older children who are dependent on their parents for their support
  • parents who are financially dependent on children who live in Sweden.

NB! Parents of students do not have right of residence.
 

Registration


A person who has a right of residence must register with the Swedish Migration Board no later than three months after entering the country. You apply by using the form Registration of right of residence no. 141011. You can choose to submit your application in person to one of the Migration Board´s permit Units or send it in by post. Note that the Permit Unit in Solna has other routines.
 

Documents you need to enclose


In order to be registered as a family member to an EU/EEA citizen you must enclose documents indicating that you meet the conditions for this:
  • copy of a valid passport or national identity card proving your citizenship
  • documents that show that your relative still has right of residence, i.e. employment certificate or bank statement that shows sufficient means  
  • marriage or registered partnership certificate (applies to husbands/wives, registered partners)  
  • civil registration certificate, lease agreement or proof of purchase of a residence (applies to common law spouse couples)
  • a birth certificate (applies to children)
  • a civil registration certificate from the person's country of origin and a bank statement showing receipt of regular financial support from the parent/ child (applies to parents and to children over the age of 21).

If your family member has the right of residence in Sweden as a student you must also enclose:

  • an assurance that you have sufficient funds for the support of your family  
  • documented proof that you have comprehensive health insurance that is valid in Sweden for all family members.

It is important that you send in all the documents and that you sign the form to ensure that you are registered as quickly as possible.
 

Registration fee


There is no cost for registering.  
 

Registration certificate


The registration certificate is sent to your address in Sweden. The registration certificate is permanent, does not need to be renewed and is valid as long as you are resident in the country on condition that you satisfy the above requirements. When you have been in Sweden legally and with right of residence for five years without a break, you have permanent right of residence. Through the EEA Agreement, citizens of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway are also covered by the principle of free movement within the EU. Switzerland is also covered by the principal of free movement through an agreement with the EU.
