Operations of the Swedish Migration Board

The Swedish Migration Board is the authority which receives applications from people wishing to visit or settle in Sweden.
Our vision is "Sweden — a nation open for the possibilities of global migration".

Those who submit an application will be treated kindly and with respect. We will provide them with good service. The authority's staff answer questions and help with information on which rules apply and how an application is processed.

We are proud to be able to welcome people to Sweden. With the Migration Board on side, the procedure will be straightforward.

Quick, correct and legally secure examination

The Migration Board endeavours to give a quick answer, after an accurate and legally secure examination. We are constantly trying to increase our accessibility and to develop our services in line with the needs of applicants. All this is done with the aim of making it as smooth as possible to move to Sweden.

Some people come to Sweden to study or because they have obtained a job here. Others follow their families or a new partner here. We examine each application in accordance with the provisions which regulate migration to Sweden. We ensure that the examination is carried out in an ordered manner. At the Migration Board, we see migration as a positive force, something which helps to make our country richer, both financially and culturally.

The Migration Board also offers many people protection from persecution and conflicts. Our mandate includes accepting asylum seekers and defending their right to protection. In conjunction with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), we also help refugees in camps around the world to start a new life in Sweden.

In time, many who move to Sweden wish to become Swedish citizens. When this is the case, it is to the Migration Board they turn. A large number of people are granted Swedish citizenship every year.  This brings with it a number of rights such as the right to vote in general elections.

Many different tasks

Other tasks carried out by the Migration Board include:

  • Paying government compensation to municipalities and county councils for people who have received residence permits
  • Offering accommodation and employment to asylum seekers during the period in which their applications are being considered
  • Giving support to asylum seekers whose applications have been refused and who are to return home
  • Operating detention centres.

The Migration Board may also provide financial support for people who have received residence permits but have decided to return to their countries of origin.

The Migration Board is active within the EU and in other international contexts. In collaboration with the migration authorities of other countries, we are working to best meet the challenges which migration and displaced persons bring with them.

Swedish asylum and migration policy is determined by the Swedish Parliament and Government. The Migration Board shall, in an accurate and objective manner, put into practice the provisions that the country's citizens have determined, via their elected representatives, shall apply.

Appeals

The decisions on residence permits and citizenship reached by the Migration Board may be appealed to a migration court. There are three migration courts which are located within the respective administrative courts in Stockholm, Göteborg and Malmö.

The highest decision-making court is the Migration Court of Appeal which forms part of the Administrative Court of Appeal in Stockholm.
