Maintenance requirement for relatives introduced on 15 April

Starting on 15 April  people who want their relatives to come and live in Sweden must be able to support themselves and have a home of sufficient size and standard. However, far from everyone is affected by the maintenance requirement.

By following the link "close relatives" below you can see which groups are exempted from the maintenance requirement.

People subject to the requirement are for example those who have had a permanent residence permit for less than four years and have been granted the permit due to:
  • particularly distressing circumstances or on humanitarian grounds
  • other severe conflicts in the home country
  • an environmental disaster.

However, the maintenance requirement does not apply to people who have children in common with the applicant.

Maintenance requirement
The amount that the person in Sweden must earn depends upon expenses and other income. The Swedish Migration Board makes an individual calculation for each person.

Home of sufficient size and standard
The Swedish Migration Board will also provide information about applicable minimum requirements via a specific "regulation" which we expect will be published at the end of April.

 More information
Detailed information about the new rules can be found on the page "close relatives".
