Waiting times for a decision

First-time applications

If you have applied online you will receive a decision within three months.

The workload is high right now and the waiting time for a decision for other applications is about seven to ten months. A complete application is easier to process.

In some cases it might take more time to process an application. For example, it may be that the Migration Board needs more information. Your case officer will contact you or your family member in Sweden.

Extensions

You must apply for an extension before your residence permit expires. Once you have submitted your application you may stay in Sweden until you have received your decision. You have the right to work in Sweden while you wait.

The Migration Board will give you a decision within six months, but it can take longer if the Migration Board needs more information. In some cases you will get an answer sooner. The waiting time starts on the day that your current residence permit expires.

Priority

The Migration Board can give your case priority if you are pregnant or if you suffer from a serious illness. If you want us to give your case priority, please contact the Customer Service or your case officer.
