29,000 expected to seek asylum this year

The increase in the number of asylum seekers will not be as big as previously estimated by the Migrations Board. The prognosis has been adjusted from 31,000 to 29,000 and from 28,000 to 27,000 for next year. The main reason is that the rise of the number of asylum seekers from Somalia has now halted.
This change means that the Migration Board has more capacity to shorten waiting time for asylum seekers. So far the processing time has been reduced to 4.5 months, the shortest it has been in 20 years.

Fewer unaccompanied children
The prognosis for unaccompanied children has also been reduced, by 400 to 2,400. The reason for this is that so far this year fewer children and young people than estimated have arrived. Despite this their number is expected to be greater this year than for previous years. The need for more places in the country´s municipalities is still great. At mid-year more than 450 children were waiting to be received by one of the 152 municipalities that currently have a reception agreement with the Migration Board.

More labour market cases waiting
For cases that involve work, visits and settlement, the prognosis for the number of cases received remains unchanged, with the exception of work permits and students. So far this year, more applications for work permits than expected have been received, and therefore the Board is increasing its prognosis for the current and coming year.
