Swedish citizenship for children

Children become Swedish citizens at birth if their mother is a Swedish citizen. The same applies if the father is a Swedish citizen and the child is born in Sweden. If the child is born abroad the child will become a Swedish citizen if the father is Swedish and married to the child´s mother.
You can find more information under the heading Automatic citizenship in the left menu.

Other rules apply for children who are Nordic citizens. See under the heading Nordic citizens.

In most cases, children with foreign citizenship become Swedish citizens in conjunction with a parent's successful application to become a Swedish citizen. In some cases, a child may become a Swedish citizen "independently" through notification. Notification is a simpler method of becoming a Swedish citizen. You can read more about how children under the age of 18 can become Swedish citizens under the headings in the left menu.
