You must apply for an extension of your permit approximately one month before your current permit expires. The Migration Board does not send out reminders.
For the first two years, your permit is restricted to a named employer and a given occupation. Therefore, you must apply for a new work permit if you change employer or occupation during the first two years. If your residence – and work permit are extended after two years, it is only restricted to a given occupation. But you will still have to apply for a new work permit if you change occupation. What to do when applying
If you apply for an extension of your residence permit through our website, you will get your decision faster, but you can also send it in to any of our permit units. Your application must consist of the following:
- A copy of your passport, where your identity and the period of validity are indicated. (If you have family members who are applying for a permit together with you, copies of their passports must also be included.) You must have a valid passport in order for the Migration Board to be able to grant you a permit. If your passport is about to expire, you must apply for a new one in your home country or at your home country´s embassy.
- The form Offer of Employment. Your employer can find the form for an offer of employment here on the Migration Board´s website.
- Statement of income for last year, from your employer if you worked in Sweden during that period.
- Payslips for this year if you work in Sweden now.
If you choose to send your application in by mail, you must also send:
- The form Application for Swedish work permit — for applicants currently in Sweden, No. 150011 or No. 151011 (in English).
- If you have family members who are applying at the same time, they will use the form Application for permit for family members of employees/visiting researchers/athletes/self-employed persons, No. 132011 or No. 133011 (in English).
- A receipt showing payment of application fees. If you pay through the Internet, you can print out the proof of payment and send it in. It is important that you indicate the first and last names, as well as the ID number, of the person the application fee applies to in the “Message to payee" or corresponding field. If the fee applies to several people, indicate the ID numbers for all of them. The fee is 1,000 SEK (500 SEK for children) and is payable to bank giro account number 5223-7005.
If you submit your application in person at any of our Permit Units, you can pay the application fee there. Other routines apply in Solna
What happens after we receive your application
If you have submitted an application for an extension, you have the right to remain in Sweden until the Migration Board has reached a decision. You also have the right to continue working for your employer if you have a permit for six months or more and your application is completed before your current permit expires. When the Migration Board has reached a decision, we will send it to your home address. The Migration Board can grant you a permanent residence permit (PUT) if you still have a job after four years in Sweden. Prior to this, the longest permit we can grant you is for two years at a time.
You will need to visit one of the Swedish Migration Board´s Permit Units to submit fingerprints and be photographed. This will usually take place when you submit your application in person. You can also be called to the Migration Board at a later date. You will also be called to the Migration Board if you apply for a residence permit online or if you send in your application by post.
If you are granted a residence permit, your residence permit card will be sent to your registered address.
If you travel abroad in connection with your permit expiring, it can be difficult for you to enter Sweden before your new permit has been granted. You may then need to wait for your new decision outside Sweden.
