Extension — self-employed

You must apply for an extension of your permit approximately one month before your current permit expires. The Migration Board does not send out reminders.

Your application must consist of the following:

  • The form: Application by self-employed persons, No. 124011 or No. 125011 (in English).
  • A receipt showing payment of application fees. If you pay through the Internet, you can print out the proof of payment and send it in. It is important that you indicate the first and last names, as well as the ID number, of the person the application fee applies to in the “Message to payee" or corresponding field. If the fee applies to several people, indicate the ID numbers for all of them. The fee is 2,000 SEK (500 SEK for children) and is payable to bank giro account number 5223-7005. If you submit your application in person at any of our permit departments, you can pay the application fee there. Other routines apply in Solna.
  • A copy of your passport where your identity, the period of validity of the passport, and any permits for countries other than your home country are indicated.  You must have a valid passport in order for the Migration Board to be able to grant you a permit. If your passport is about to expire, you must apply for a new one in your home country or at your home country's embassy.
  • Certificate of Registration for your business. You can order one from www.skatteverket.seexternal link, opens in new window, or call 020-567 000.
  • An annual report with a consolidated statement of income and balance sheet, or an annual financial statement.
  • If you have family members who are applying at the same time, they will use the form Application for permit for family members of employees/visiting researchers/athletes/self-employed persons, No. 132011 or No. 133011 (in English).

What to do when applying

Send in your application to Migrationsverket, Arbetstillståndsenheten, 601 70 Norrköping, or submit it at any one of our Permit Units.

What happens after we receive your application

If you have submitted an application for an extension, you have the right to remain in Sweden until the Migration Board has reached a decision. You also have the right to work in your company. When the Migration Board has reached a decision, we will send it to your home address.

After two years, we can grant you permanent residence permit. The Migration Board verifies that you are running the business according to the plans you have reported, that you have other permits which may be required for the operation, and that you can support yourself on the income from it.

You will need to visit one of the Swedish Migration Board´s Permit Units to submit fingerprints and be photographed. This will usually take place when you submit your application in person. You can also be called to the Migration Board at a later date. You will also be called to the Migration Board if you apply for a residence permit on the website or if you send in your application by post.

If you are granted a residence permit, your residence permit card will be sent to your registered address.

If you travel abroad in connection with your permit expiring, it can be difficult for you to enter Sweden before your new permit has been granted. You may then need to wait for your new decision outside Sweden.
