Extension — long-term resident in Sweden

You must apply for an extension of your permit approximately one month before your current permit expires. The Migration Board does not send out reminders.
After five years with a residence permit in Sweden, as a long-term resident you have the opportunity to apply for the status of permanent resident in Sweden. For further information, please see under the heading Long–term resident in Sweden in the left menu.

What to do when applying


You apply using the form Application for residence permit for persons who are long-term residents in another Member State, no. 137011. You can choose to submit your application in person to one of the Migration Board´s permit Units or send it in by post. Note that the Permit Unit in Solna has other routines.

For children under 18, a guardian must endorse the application by signing it.

Documents you need to enclose


When you apply for an extension of your permit you need to enclose a copy of a valid passport where citizenship is indicated. You must also enclose:
  • Copies of your EC permit for permanent residents.
  • Documents that show you continue to meet the requirements. More information about which documents to attach, see the application form.
  • Receipt showing payment of application fee.

During processing


If you have submitted an application for an extension, you have the right to remain in Sweden until the Migration Board has reached a decision. You also have the right to work during the waiting period.

You will need to visit one of the Swedish Migration Board´s Permit Units to submit fingerprints and be photographed. This will usually take place when you submit your application in person. You can also be called to the Migration Board at a later date. You will also be called to the Migration Board if you send in your application by post.  
 

After decision


When the Migration Board has reached a decision, we will send it to your home address.
