Being released from Swedish citizenship

If you no longer wish to be a Swedish citizen, you may apply to be released from it.
In order to be released from your citizenship, you must:
  • be a citizen of another country or
  • have the intention of seeking citizenship of another country.
In the latter case, you will be released from your Swedish citizenship if you obtain another citizenship within one year. 

Apply for release


If you live outside Sweden, submit your application to the nearest Swedish embassy or consulate. If you are resident in Sweden you can submit your application to one of the Migration Board's permit units or send it to:

Fee


It costs nothing to apply to be released from your Swedish citizenship.

After decision


The Migration Board will send the decision home to you or to the Swedish embassy/consulate.
