Right to appeal

Here you will find information on how to appeal a decision concerning registration, residence card or residence permit.

Right of residence or residence card

A decision regarding residence card or a decision not to register right residence cannot be appealed. If you do not have right of residence or residence card, you can apply for a residence permit instead.

Long-term resident and residence permit

If the Swedish Migration Board rejects your application, you may appeal the decision within three weeks of the date you were given the decision. You must send the appeal to the Swedish Migration Board.

How it is done

  • Write which decision you want to appeal and how you want it changed
  • Write your name, personal number, address and phone number
  • Sign the letter with your name
  • Send the appeal to the unit who made the decision in your case.

If the Board stands by its rejection decision, your appeal will be passed on to the Migration Court at one of the administrative courts in Stockholm, Göteborg or Malmö. Which court will hear your appeal depends on which Permit Unit rejected your application.

Power of attorney

If you have given power of attorney, and thus the right to represent you, to a relative in Sweden, that person can write and submit the appeal for you. The power of attorney must also be submitted.
