Persons between the ages of 18 and 20
Foreign citizens or stateless persons between the ages of 18 and 20 may submit notification of Swedish citizenship under certain circumstances. Notification is a simpler way of becoming a Swedish citizen.
Special rules apply if you are a citizen of Denmark, Finland, Iceland or Norway. You may submit a notification of Swedish citizenship if you:
- have turned 18 but are under 20 and
- have a permanent residence permit in Sweden or a permanent right of residence and
- have lived in Sweden since the day you turned 13, for stateless persons the day you turned 15. The period in Sweden must have been continuous and with a permit for settlement, a so-called period of residence.
If you have previously received a decision on refusal of entry or deportation by the Alien's Appeal Board* or the Migration Court, you must have received a permit for settlement before you turned 13 (15 if you are stateless). If you do not fulfil the requirements to submit a notification for Swedish citizenship, you must submit an application for Swedish citizenship. Read more about the requirements for citizenship.
*The Alien's Appeal Board was until March 2006 the authority that tried the Migration Board's decisions that were appealed. The authority was closed down on 30 March 2006 and was replaced by Migration Courts.
If you have children
If you have children who are residents in Sweden, they will become Swedish citizens at the same time as you if:
- you have sole custody of the child or children or
- you share custody with the other parent and he or she is a Swedish citizen or
- the other parent becomes a Swedish citizen at the same time as you.
Submitting notification
Use the form Notification of Swedish citizenship for persons who have turned 18 but are under 20 (Anmälan om svenskt medborgarskap för person som har fyllt 18 men inte 20 år), no. 304041. You send the notification to:Migrationsverket
Medborgarskapsenheten

The personal registration certificate is entitled Application for Swedish citizenship (Ansökan om svenskt medborgarskap) and you can order it from the Swedish Tax Agency.

- residence permit card (if you have it).
- receipt for payment of the notification fee or document confirming that you have paid via the Internet, for example.
If you enclose original documents, you should send your notification as registered post. All copies which you send are to be certified.
Fee
Most people must pay an application fee. For further information, read the information about fees under the following link Avgifter (only available in Swedish). After decision
The Migration Board will send the decision to your registered address. If you have become a Swedish citizen, we will also send a copy of the certificate to the population registry at the Swedish Tax Agency. You turn to the police if you wish to apply for a Swedish passport.
