Residence permit cards to be introduced in May
All EU member states will issue residence permit cards (UT cards) beginning 20 May 2011. The card will contain biometric data (photographs and two finger prints).
If you receive a residence permit after 20 May, you will be given a residence permit card. The card will have a chip where your biometric data will be stored. The UT card is proof of your residence permit. It is not an ID card or a travel document. When you enter Sweden, you must therefore show your UT card along with a valid passport. For those in Sweden
If you are applying for a residence permit in Sweden, you will need to visit one of the Swedish Migration Board´s Permit Units to submit finger prints and be photographed. This will usually take place when you submit your application in person. You can also be called to the Migration Board at a later date. Even if you apply for a residence permit electronically, or send in your application, you will be called to submit your biometric data.
If you are granted a residence permit, your UT card will be sent to your registered address.For those outside of Sweden
If you are applying for a residence permit through a Swedish mission abroad (embassy or consulate), you will be photographed and will need to submit finger prints in connection with: - submitting your application;
- during your interview (if you are called to one); or
- when you receive your residence permit.
The Swedish mission abroad will issue or send your finished card to you.
For those applying electronically outside of Sweden
If you are applying electronically, you can send in your application first and then visit a Swedish mission abroad to be photographed and submit your finger prints.
