What happens after we receive your application for an extension
Your application for an extension of your residence permit will be processed after the period of validity for your current permit expires.
If you have submitted an application for an extension, you have the right to remain in Sweden until the Migration Board has reached a decision. You also have the right to work during the waiting period, if you have submitted your application before your current permit expires. Keep in mind that you have the right to continue working during the waiting period only if your application is completed before your current permit expires. We recommend that you stay in Sweden while waiting for a new decision, since it may be difficult to enter Sweden without a valid permit. It may take some time after your current permit has expired before you will receive a new decision. Before the Migration Board can reach a decision you and your family member must be interviewed. You and your family member will be summoned to an interview. If you have lived together for two years or more the Migration Board will in general issue a permanent residence permit (PUT). Residence permit card
When a decision has been reached it will be sent to your home by mail. If you have been granted a residence permit you will be issued a new residence permit card. If you have not already been photographed and fingerprinted (for instance when you submitted your application or when you where interviewed) you will be asked to come in again for this procedure. Your photograph and fingerprints will be stored electronically in a chip on your residence card, and will not be saved by the Migration Board. The card is valid for a maximum of five years, and when it has expired you must visit the Migration Board to have your photo and fingerprints taken again. When the card has been produced it will be sent to your home address. It may take approximately one week to produce your residence permit card.
