The issuing of residence permit cards begins on May 20
On Friday May 20, 2011, an EU regulation will enter into force, which means that Swedish national authorities will begin issuing residence permit cards instead of the current stickers being inserted into passports. The card will start being produced and issued on May 20, 2011.
The card will be biometric — it has a data chip with the bearer´s photo and finger prints. The biometric data will be stored only on the card´s chip. The residence permit card is only proof of residence permit; it cannot be used as an ID card or travel document.
The residence permit card is sent automatically to the applicant´s address in Sweden one week after a decision has been made, if the biometric data has already been submitted. Asylum seekers should go to the Migration Board's permit units to get their cards. A person residing abroad can get their UT cards at Swedish missions abroad, in accordance with the procedures that each mission has established.
No residence permit card will be issued for a residence permit seven days or shorter. These persons obtain their decision instead as proof of a residence permit. A photo and fingerprints are not taken in these cases.
The residence permit card is to be presented alongside a valid passport document when crossing the border, and should be with you when travelling to Sweden.
