UNHCR — UN Refugee Agency
The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is an important partner to the Swedish Migration Board, particularly in relation to the resettlement of quota refugees, but also regarding actions related to protection and international recommendations in the area of migration.
UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) was founded by the UN General Assembly in 1950 and is mandated to lead and coordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. UNHCR strives to protect the universal right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another state, with the option to return home voluntarily, integrate locally in the first country of asylum or to resettle in a third country. In more than five decades, UNHCR has helped nearly 50 million people to begin new lives. Today, about 6,200 people work for UNHCR in 115 countries, helping approximately 20.6 million people.
During 2009–2010 Sweden chaired the UNHCR Annual Tripartite Consultation on Resettlement (ATCR), a forum for discussions about resettlement.
