Respect for human rights is one of the cornerstones of Sweden's migration policy. Displaced persons shall have an opportunity to seek sanctuary in Sweden. People who need and seek protection shall know that they are welcome here, in accordance with Swedish laws and the conventions to which Sweden is a signatory.
Human rights apply to each and everyone. They declare that all people are born free and equal in dignity and rights. Human rights are universal. They apply throughout the world, irrespective of country, culture or association.Sweden is bound by various international agreements and conventions which guarantee the individual's rights against State authority. Primary responsibility for this lies with governments.
The Swedish Migration Board has greater responsibility than many other authorities for ensuring that these rights are given a specific meaning. Individual persons rights and freedoms may be updated when the Migration Board intervenes, for example when someone is detained.
The Migration Board's work within human rights
Swedish law stipulates that it is a human right to seek and receive protection if one needs it and it is also a human right to live together and form a family with whomever one wishes. The Migration Board works with human rights by granting permits to those who for different reasons wish to immigrate to Sweden. It offers support to those who already have residence permits here but who, nevertheless, wish to return to their countries of origin. The Migration Board is also responsible for ensuring that those persons who have been refused entry or issued with a deportation order voluntarily leave Sweden and that this takes place in a dignified manner.
Education on human rights
The Migration Board's internal training includes education on human rights. All those who work for the Migration Board shall have the qualifications required to conduct their various duties in the appropriate manner. The training includes both basic and advanced courses. Subjects covered include the rights of the child, prohibition of discrimination, detention issues, rights of asylum seekers, the appeals system and the right to right to family unity.
