If you´re a student waiting for a decision

This year, the Swedish Migration Board prioritised applications from students seeking permits for the first time. It appears now that most of them will have a decision before the term starts.
It is likely that this year, most students applying for the first time and who have already submitted an application for residence permit will be notified before the fall term begins.

You must have a UT card to enter Sweden

If you receive a residence permit, you will be given a residence permit card (UT card). The UT card is proof that you have a residence permit, and will take two weeks to produce. The UT card must be shown along with a valid passport when crossing the border.

The main principle is that everyone must have a UT card to enter Sweden, but the Migration Board has decided on an exception for those who do not need an entry visa. You can enter with your passport and the decision on a residence permit and obtain your UT card in Sweden. Read more about when a UT card can can be issued after entry.

If you need an entry visa to enter Sweden, you must wait for your UT card before you travel. Swedish missions abroad can, in exceptional cases, grant a class ‘D´ entry visa if you absolutely cannot wait for your UT card before you travel to Sweden. Contact the embassy or Consulate General in your country for more information.

If you have applied for an extension and are abroad

Even if you have applied for an extension of your permit, you need a UT to enter Sweden, if your previous permit has expired. If you have been photographed and fingerprinted at the Migration Board in connection with your application, the UT card will be sent to your address in Sweden.

If you have not previously been photographed and fingerprinted, you can contact a Swedish embassy or Consulate General to do this after a decision has been made. When the residence permit card is ready, it will be sent to the Swedish mission abroad, which will then issue it to you.

If you have waited a long time for your UT card, you can contact the Migration Board to find out whether the UT card has been sent back, for example due to an incorrect address.
