Permits for family members

If you are a family member of a student with a residence permit, you can also get a residence permit for the same period if you meet the relevant conditions. You may not, however, work during the permit period.
A spouse, common law spouse, and unmarried child under the age 18 all count as a family member. Note that you must have lived together outside of Sweden to be considered a common law spouse.

Requirements for residence permit

You are eligible for a residence permit if your family member have a residence permit for studies and if you:
  • have your support secured for the whole planned period of stay in Sweden
  • have a valid passport.

The support requirement for the entire period of stay is SEK 3,500 per month for a husband/wife or common law spouse and SEK 2,100 per month for each child.

Applying for a residence permit

Your family member can apply for you, if the two of you apply on the web at the same time. If you apply at a later point in time than your family member, complete the following form: Application by co-applicant to students/doctoral students, number 135011, and submit it to a Swedish mission abroad (embassy or Consulate general) in your country of origin.

Those who receive a residence permit will be given a residence permit card. The card is proof of your residence permit. In order for the Migration Board to be able to issue a residence permit card, you will be photographed and will need to submit fingerprints in connection with submitting your application or at a later time, for example, when you receive your residence permit.

What to send in with your application

It is important that you send in all documents that the Migration Board asks for. Enclose the following documents:
  • copies of the pages of your passport that show your identity, citizenship and the validity period of your passport
  • documents showing how you are related to each other
  • documents, for example, a bank statement showing that you have funds to support yourself. The bank statement should be in English.

Check the requirements of Swedish missions abroad

Note that the Swedish mission where you submit your application may require additional documents. You will find more information and contact information on the website of the Swedish missionexternal link, opens in new window.

Application fee

Most people must pay an application fee; see the page Fees.

Decision

The decision will be sent to the Swedish mission abroad where you applied or that you specified when you applied via the website. If you have not previously been photographed and had your fingerprints taken, you will need to visit the Swedish mission to do so. Once the residence permit card is ready, the Swedish mission will issue, or in certain cases send, the card to you. When you enter Sweden you must show your card along with a valid passport.
