Repatriation

One of the Migration Board's tasks is to make matters easier for those, refugees and other people, in need of protection and holding permanent residence permits, who wish to repatriate to their countries of origin.
The goal is to support these individuals so that they will themselves be able to determine whether and when they wish to return to their countries of origin. The Migration Board has contact persons for voluntary repatriation in Gothenburg, Malmö and Stockholm.

A fact sheet about what to consider during the process of repatriating has been produced by the Migration Board in collaboration with the Swedish Red Cross, the Social Mission, Caritas Sweden, the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions and Stockholm City Voluntary Repatriation. You will find the fact sheet and more information under the heading “Before leaving Sweden" in the menu to the left on this page.

Information activities

Information is an important element of the work with repatriation. This work can be orientated towards individual persons, but may also be aimed at enhancing the awareness of other actors who in various ways have contact with foreign citizens with permanent residence permits in Sweden. Examples of such actors include public authorities, municipalities, county councils, the Swedish Public Employment Service, county administrations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and immigrants' own organizations and associations.

The information deals with the opportunities available to facilitate voluntary repatriation. Information input has been obtained by means of preliminary studies, reconnaissance journeys and the collection of factual information in the field.

The gathered information is spread by persons concerned through meetings, websites, local media and directly to individuals interested in repatriation. The Migration Boards contact persons have also gathered, processed and spread up to date information, and answered inquiries about voluntary repatriation.

Countries concerned during 2011 were Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Burundi, Chile, Colombia, The Democratic Republic of Kongo, Iraq, Somalia and Sudan.

Collaboration

The Board's contact persons for voluntary repatriation collaborate with municipalities, businesses, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and immigrants' national federations and associations with ties to their countries of origin.

The Migration Boards representative was invited to talk about our activities at a conference on voluntary repatriation arranged by Stockholm City Voluntary Repatriation, in collaboration with municipalities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The purpose of the conference was to spread implementation of proven methods of supporting voluntary repatriation through the Centre for local Development and Diaspora. Participants came from Bosnia and Herzegovina's, Chile's, Lithuania's, Rwanda's, Serbia's, Sudan's and Turkey's missions abroad, the Ministries of Justice and Foreign Affairs, as well as non governmental organizations and study associations.

Support in connection with repatriation

It is possible to apply for an allowance for the trip back home, and cash support for the initial period in the country of origin.

In 2011 a total of 15 applications were submitted and 12 persons were granted travel allowances and cash support. Subsidies were granted to repatriate to Chile (1 person), Colombia (2 persons), The Democratic Republic of Kongo (8 persons) och Iraq (1 person).
