Project operations constitute a large part of the Board's work with repatriation. Project support can be granted to municipalities, foundations, organizations, associations and even businesses, subject to the precondition that the project is not to be conducted commercially. Individual persons cannot apply for support for a project.
The Board can also jointly finance projects that are granted funds from the European Refugee Fund (ERF). An information sheet has been made available, in Swedish only, describing how applications are to be made for support for relevant projects. In 2011 the Swedish Migration Board funded four projects and two studies with a focus on Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iraq, northern Sudan, southern Sudan and Somalia.Examples of projects that have been granted support
BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA
BH Net Support network for repatriates. The purpose of the project is to facilitate repatriation for elderly Bosnians. BH Net also offers counseling to all nationalities, specifically focusing on opportunities for self-sufficiency. The network also wishes to identify prospective Iraqi repatriates in the Malmö area, and cooperate with the city of Malmö in designing and developing new modes of cooperation for long-term voluntary repatriation acitivities. Tillväxtgruppen Iraq wishes to establish a Centre for Local Development and Diaspora (CLDD) in Bagdad in cooperation with Stockholm´s activities for voluntary repatriation and the Province of Bagdad. Establishing such a centre may facilitate a long-term and durable reaptriation process. The centre will also function as a platform for development and long-term cooperation, and constitute a meeting point for diaspora. Tillväxtgruppen Iraq will during the project time-frame offer information, advice and support to iraqis who wish to repatriate to iraq. Boosting knowledge in environmental issues to returning Iraqis with permanent residence permit
The project is carried out by Sweco Environment Ltd in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment in Iraq. A course that is designed to increase knowledge and awareness that focuses on environmental technology and quality. After graduation, students should be able to contribute to reconstruction and development of their country of origin. The training will give the participants knowledge, which makes them more competitive on the Iraqi labor market in the environmental field, the ultimate aim is repatriation and employment in the country of origin. The goal is to create better opportunities for the target group to join Iraqi or Swedish / European companies, which are active or want to be active in Iraq, but also to start their own businesses.
