A child born abroad with a Swedish father

When a foreign woman has a child with a Swedish man and the child is born abroad, the child does not become a Swedish citizen if its parents are not married. The child's father may submit a notification of Swedish citizenship for the child. Only the father of the child may submit a notification.
The requirements are that:
  • you are a Swedish citizen since the birth of the child and
  • the child is younger than 18 when the notification is submitted and
  • you and the child´s mother have not subsequently married each other (if that is the case, the child automatically becomes a Swedish citizen, see the page Automatic citizenship) and
  • it is proven that you are the child´s father. A valid confirmation of paternity must exist when the notification occurs.

Consent required

Children who have reached the age of 12 must give their written consent to become a Swedish citizen. However, this is not required if the child is unable to give its consent due to any permanent handicap or a similar condition.

If the mother shares custody of the child or if she has sole custody of the child, she must consent to the child becoming a Swedish citizen. If someone other than the parents has custody of the child, they must give their consent to the child becoming a Swedish citizen.

Submitting notification

You apply by using the form Notification of Swedish citizenship for children born abroad to a Swedish father (Anmälan om svenskt medborgarskap för barn fött utomlands med svensk far), no. 303041. If the child is not registered in Sweden, send the notification to the a Swedish embassy or consulate. Is the child registered in Sweden, you send the notification to:

Migrationsverket
Medborgarskapsenheten
SE-601 70 NORRKÖPING
