A child whose parents are not Swedish citizens
Children who do not automatically become a Swedish citizen can become a Swedish citizen through notification. Special rules apply for children who are stateless or Nordic citizens, see these pages in the left menu.
A child can become a Swedish citizen through notification if the child:- has a permanent residence permit in Sweden
- has been resident in the country for five years or, if the child is stateless, for three years
- has not reached the age of 18.
NB! All these conditions must be fulfilled. Notification is to be submitted by the person who has custody of the child. Submitting notification
As custodial guardian you can submit an application for the child to become a Swedish citizen here at the website.
You can also apply by using the form Notification of Swedish citizenship for children resident in Sweden (Anmälan om svenskt medborgarskap för barn bosatt i Sverige), no. 307011. You send it to:Migrationsverket
Medborgarskapsenheten
601 70 Norrköping
Consent required
Children who have reached the age of 12 must give their written consent to become a Swedish citizen. However, this is not required if the child is unable to give its consent due to any permanent handicap or a similar condition.Documents you need to enclose
It is important that you submit the documents requested by the Migration Board because it makes the processing easier. You must include:- the child's national passport, travel document or alien's passport in the original
- a residence permit card (if the child has one)
- civic registration certificate for Swedish citizenship for the child
- custody decision if someone other than the child's mother or father has custody.
If you enclose original documents, you should send your notification as registered post. All copies which are enclosed are to be certified.
Fee
For information about fees see the link Avgifter (only available in Swedish). After decision
The Migration Board will send the decision to you. If the child has become a Swedish citizen, we will also send a copy of the certificate to the population registry at the Swedish Tax Agency. You turn to the police if you wish to apply for a Swedish passport for the child.
