If you are a family member of an EU/EEA citizen, and a citizen of a country outside the EU, you can get proof that you have permanent right of residence if you have stayed legally in Sweden for at least five years.
If you would like to have proof of your permanent right of residence, you can apply for a permanent residence card (PUK) at any of the Migration Board's Permit Units."Legal stay" in this context means that you have met the requirements for the right of residence in accordance with the EU mobility directive during your entire stay in Sweden.
A photograph is required for a permanent residence card to be issued. You may be photographed when you submit your application or after the decision has been made.
How to apply
You need to complete the form Intyg om permanent uppehållsrätt/Ansökan om permanent uppehållskort, No. 142011 (in Swedish only), and submit it to the Migration Board. You must enclose:
- a copy of your passport where your citizenship is indicated
- proof of familial relationship (documents that confirm family connections) showing that you are a family member of an EU/EEA citizen
- proof of occupation (job, studies, and the like) showing that your family member, who is an EU/EEA citizen, has been supporting him-/herself during the past five years in Sweden
- if you and your family member stayed in Sweden as persons with sufficient funds, you must show that you were able to support yourself on your own money for your entire stay
- proof of national registration, e.g. a copy of the certificate that shows how long you have resided in Sweden.
The permanent residence card will be sent to your home address by post.
Application fee
There is no application fee for a certificate of permanent right of residence.
