Residence permit to study at universities and colleges of higher education – first time applications

• Copy of your and your co-applicants passports.
• Letter of acceptance or certificate (proof) of /doctoral students (PhD-studies).
• Certificate (proof) of funds to support yourself or yourself and your co-applicants.
• Certificate (proof) of comprehensive health insurance if you are studying in Sweden for less than one year.
• For those applying with you, certificate (proof) of relationship shall be included, e.g. marriage certificate, birth certificates, certification of cohabitation.

In order to obtain a decision as soon as possible, it is advisable that your documents are translated into Swedish or English by an authorized translator. All documents you submit must be legible. The documents must each not exceed 2 Megabytes (2 MB). We accept files in the following formats: pdf, doc, jpg, png, rtf, txt.

Extensions of residence permits for studies

It is important that the documents you enclose are of good quality. The processing of your application may take much longer time if the Migration Board has to check your documents with the help of a Swedish embassy or consulate.

Extension of a residence permit for doctoral students/research students at a postgraduate level

• a copy of your passport, showing your identity and citizenship and the passport´s date of expiry
• copies of the passports of accompanying family members, showing their identity and citizenship and the dates of expiry of the passports.
• evidence of continued studies from your institution/college
• certificate of grades achieved from your institution/college
• a bank statement confirming that you have funds to support yourself or a bank statement showing that funds are regularly transferred to you or a certificate of scholarship, training grant or doctoral studentship or a certificate showing that you have been awarded a study grant from your home country. The document must contain details of the amount and the period during which you will be receiving the money.

Extension of a residence permit for studies at a folk high school

• a copy of your passport, showing your identity and citizenship and the passport´s date of expiry
• copies of the passports of accompanying family members, showing their identity and citizenship and the dates of expiry of the passports.
• evidence of continued studies from your school or institution
• a certificate of grades achieved from your school or institution
• a bank statement confirming that you have funds to support yourself or a bank statement showing that funds are regularly transferred to you  or a certificate of scholarship or a certificate showing that you have been awarded a study grant from your home country. EU/EEA citizens  — registration of right of residence, students

• a copy of your passport or your national ID card. A passport copy shall showyour identity and citizenship and the passport´s date of expiry. A copy of a national ID card must show which country issued the card, ID card number and its date of expiry.
• a certificate of acceptance for studies at “gymnasium" level (upper secondary school) or higher education
• a statement of means of support
• a certificate of health insurance coverage
• If you have accompanying family members who are citizens of an EU /EEA country you must also attach the following supplements

For husband, wife, registered partner or common-law spouse

• a copy of passport or national ID card. A passport copy shall showhis/her identity and citizenship and the passport´s date of expiry. A copy of a national ID card must show which country issued the card, ID card number and its date of expiry.
• a certificate of kinship, e.g. marriage certificate

For children under 21 years

• copies of passports or national ID cards. A passport copy shall showthe identity of the holder, his/her citizenship and the passport´s date of expiry. A copy of a national ID card must show which country issued the card, ID card number and its date of expiry.
• a certificate of kinship, e.g. birth certificate
