Risk of a longer processing time if you wait to apply for residence status

As a British citizen who wants to continue living in Sweden even though the UK has left the EU, you must apply for residence status. This also applies to your family members. Half way into the application period, there are still many people who have not sent in their application.

In that the UK left the EU on 31 January 2020, as a British citizen, you and your family members need to apply for residence status to continue living in Sweden. The application must have been received by the Swedish Migration Agency no later than 30 September 2021 when the time limit for the application for residence status expires. However, there is reason to apply for residence status well before that date.

In order to avoid long processing times towards the end of the application period, it would be good if as many people as possible already now consider their possibilities of applying early. This may be good for you if you need your residence status for a special occasion, such as applying for studies.

The Swedish Migration Agency’s processing time is extensively affected by whether the applications received are complete or not. To-date, the Swedish Migration Agency has received many applications that are missing the necessary documents. The fastest way for you to get a response to your application is therefore to carefully review the requirements for the application and send in a complete digital application as soon as you can.
