The application period for residence status has been extended to 31 December 2021
If you are a British citizen or a family member of a British citizen, you will be given an additional three months to apply for residence status. The Swedish Government has decided to keep the application period open until the end of the year.
The reason for the decision to extend the application period is that the Government considers that there may be British citizens who both meet the conditions for residence status and want to stay in Sweden but who, for various reasons, have not yet submitted an application.
The decision means that if you are a British citizen or a family member of a British citizen, you can apply for residence status until 31 December 2021. It also means that you have the right to continue living, working and studying in Sweden until the end of the year, even if you do not intend to apply for residence status.
Although the timeframe for the application has been extended, the Swedish Migration Agency recommends that if you have not yet applied for residence status, you should not wait longer than necessary to submit your application, especially in cases where a decision on residence status is needed by a certain date.
If you are a British citizen and have a permanent residence permit or Swedish citizenship, you also have the right to apply for residence status but do not have to do so because you have already legalised your stay in the country. If you have not secured the right to stay permanently in Sweden in any of these ways, you need to apply for residence status if you want to continue living, working and studying in Sweden after 31 December 2021.
