31 December is the last day you can apply for residence status
The application period for residence status is now coming to an end. If you are a British citizen, you have until 31 December 2021 to secure your long-term stay in Sweden via this right of residence.
After 31 December 2021, it is instead the national regulatory framework that offers the possibility to stay permanently in Sweden. This applies with the exception of certain groups that will be able to apply for residence status after that date.
The following persons will continue to have the right to apply for residence status:
- Children born or adopted after 31 December 2021 with a parent who is a British citizen with the right to stay permanently in Sweden in accordance with the Withdrawal Agreement.
- Family members of a British citizen with the right to stay permanently in Sweden in accordance with the Withdrawal Agreement.
In these cases, the application must have been received by the Swedish Migration Agency within three months after arrival in Sweden. For children born in Sweden, this means three months from their date of birth.
Under the Withdrawal Agreement, applications received after 31 December from persons not belonging to any of the above-mentioned groups can be accepted if there are “reasonable grounds” for the application being submitted late. What constitutes reasonable grounds is assessed individually.
If you have not yet submitted your application for residence status, it is recommended you do so as soon as possible. This also applies to those who have a permanent residence permit or Swedish citizenship. In some respects, residence status offers more generous rights, for example, when it comes to close relatives' possibility to settle in Sweden.
