Extending the residence permit to live with someone in Sweden
If you have a residence permit and want to continue living in Sweden after your permit has expired, you need to apply for an extension of your residence permit. If you have had a residence permit for 6 months or more and apply before your current permit expires, you are entitled to keep working while you wait for a decision. Apply at the earliest 30 days before your current permit expires.
When applying online you are given clear instructions about how to fill in your application and what you should send with the application. This makes it easier for you to apply correctly and increases your chances of a quick decision. Note that you cannot apply online if your relationship has ended.
If you have a residence permit due to ties with an EU citizen who has a residence permit, you can no longer be granted extensions to your residence permit. You may, however, be able to apply for a residence card.
If you have already submitted an application
If you have submitted an application for a residence permit that has not yet been decided on, please do not submit a new online application. Instead, contact the Swedish Migration Agency if you want to provide additional information in the case. The waiting time in your case will not be shortened if you make a new online application.
Fill in the application
In the application, fill in information about yourself and your partner or other close relative. If you have children under 18 who also need a residence permit, you apply for them at the same time.
In order to apply online
- you and the person moving to Sweden must be older than 18
- you, and your children applying with you, must be registered in Sweden
- you must have a valid email address
- you must be able to pay the application fee by Visa or MasterCard
- you must be able to scan or photograph the documents you are enclosing.
The following documents are to be scanned or photographed and sent with your application:
- copies of the pages in your passport which show your personal information, photograph, signature, passport number, passport issuing country, the passport's period of validity and whether you have permission to live in countries other than your country of origin. If your passport is about to expire, you should renew it as you cannot obtain a permit for longer than the validity of your passport. You do this in your country of origin or your country of origin's embassy
- copies of a passport or identification document showing personal information for the relative with whom you are applying for a residence permit to live
- the form assurance of cohabitation which your partner must fill in. Please note that you and your partner do not need to print and sign the assurance of cohabitation by hand when you apply online. If you open the form in the latest version of Adobe Acrobat (which you can download free of charge), you can fill out the form and save it on your computer. This makes it simple for you to enclose it with your application. If you are unable to save the form on your computer, you will have to print it, scan or photograph it and then enclose it with your application.
Make sure that the information on the documents you enclose is clearly visible. Check that the numbers and characters at the top and bottom of the passport pages is clear and legible.
If you are applying for your children at the same time you must also send in
- a copy of the child's passport that shows their personal information, photograph, signature, passport number, passport issuing country, the period of the passport's validity and whether the child have permission to live in countries other than their country of origin.
If your children are over the age of 18, you cannot include them in the web application. Instead they should submit their own application on the form Residence permit to settle in Sweden, number 161011.
Pay and submit your application
In most cases you must pay a fee. You can pay using a Visa or MasterCard. When the fee is paid you submit your application. You will receive an email confirming that your application has been submitted. The Migration Agency will contact you if it needs more information.
Interview at the Migration Agency
Sometimes the Migration Agency will want to meet you and your partner or relative. If you are going for an interview, you will receive a summons to an interview via the email address you provided when you made your application.
The Migration Agency processes the application
If you have submitted an application for extension, you are entitled to remain in Sweden until the Migration Agency has made a decision. You also have the right to continue working if you have had a residence permit for 6 months or more and the application is made before the current permit expires.
Remember that you are only entitled to keep working during the waiting period if your application is received by the Migration Agency before your previous permit expires.
If you have previously received a decision denoting rejection or expulsion and you apply after your previous permit has expired, your application will be considered under the rules regarding impediments to enforcement and thus other, tougher requirements apply to obtaining a permit.
If the Migration Agency needs more information from you
The Migration Agency will contact you if we need additional information or documents from you. You do not need to contact the Migration Agency. If you have applied online and the Migration Agency asks you to supplement your application, please do so via email. You should not submit documents to the Migration Agency by regular mail. You can learn more about how to supplement your case in the email that the Migration Agency sends when you need to submit more information.
Travelling abroad during the processing time
If you are travelling abroad as your permit expires, you may have trouble re-entering Sweden before your new permit is approved. You may need to await your new permit outside of Sweden. If you urgently need to return to Sweden before this, it is possible to apply for an entry visa. This visa allows you to travel back to Sweden and wait for the decision about your extension. Apply for a visa at a Swedish embassy or consulate-general in the country where you are now.
Information needed for residence permit card
If you receive a residence permit you will also receive a residence permit card. The card proves that you have permission to reside in Sweden and contains information such as your fingerprints and a photograph. You therefore need to book an appointment at the Migration Agency to be photographed and fingerprinted as soon as possible. You need to do this even if you have previously had a residence permit card, as your photograph and fingerprints are not saved.
The decision is sent to you
You will receive an email confirming that a decision has been made. The actual decision is then sent to your address in Sweden. When the residence permit card is ready it will be sent to you within about a week.
Permanent residence permit
Once you have had a residence permit and you and your partner or relative have lived together for two years, you can get a permanent residence permit. Your permanent residence permit is valid as long as you are living in Sweden. Keep in mind that if you have spent significant parts of the permit period outside of Sweden, this may affect your chances of receiving a permanent residence permit.
If the Migration Agency refuses your application
If you do not get a residence permit, you can appeal the decision within three weeks from the date when you were informed of the decision. Information on how to do this can be found in the decision. If you have given someone power of attorney to represent you, this person can file an appeal. Children under the age of 18 cannot personally file an appeal. It is the parents or other custodians who file an appeal for the child.
