The Swedish Migration Agency is introducing new rules for better passport check
From 1 November, some people applying for an extended residence permit must show their passport in person before the Swedish Migration Agency can make a decision.
On 1 November, the Swedish Migration Agency will introduce new rules for better passport check. This applies in all cases in which a valid passport is required in order to obtain a residence permit, and means that the applicant must show her/his passport during a personal visit before the Swedish Migration Agency can make a decision.
We will contact you
When you apply for an extended residence permit, in certain cases you need to have a valid passport.
This may apply if you:
- are a family member of a person who has previously applied for asylum.
- are studying at the upper-secondary (high school) level.
- wish to look for work after completing studies at upper-secondary (high school) level.
If you need a passport to obtain a residence permit, we will contact you after we have received your application. If you have not previously shown your passport to the Swedish Migration Agency, a Swedish embassy, or a consulate-general, we will ask you to visit us to show the passport. You should not send us your passport.
Keep in mind that if you need a passport, you cannot get a residence permit for longer than the passport is valid. If your passport is about to expire, it may be a good idea to renew it when you apply for an extended residence permit.
Permanent residence permits
If you are applying for a permanent residence permit and meet the requirements to be granted one, you do not need to show your passport.
