Residence permit after studies or research

If you have a residence permit for studies in higher education in Sweden and have completed your studies here, you can get a residence permit to seek employment or examine the possibilities of starting your own business here. This also applies if you have a residence permit for research and have completed your research. You must apply for a residence permit while you are still in Sweden.

If you have had a residence permit for studies or research in another EU country and during the period of the residence permit have spent time in Sweden and conducted part of your studies or your research here, you can apply for a residence permit to seek employment while you are still in Sweden.

Requirements for obtaining a residence permit

To obtain a residence permit you have to

  • submit the application before your current permit expires
  • still be in Sweden (your application may be refused if you have left Sweden after completing your studies)
  • hold a passport that is valid for the whole period you intend to be in Sweden
  • have completed a higher education programme (at a university or at a university college) that has lasted at least two semesters – this means that you must have passed all of your courses. For researchers, you must have completed your research
  • have had a residence permit for higher education in Sweden as your latest residence permit. You may also have had a residence permit for mobility studies issued by another EU country where a part of the educational programme took place in Sweden. If you have completed you research, your latest residence permit must have been in Sweden or in another EU-country
  • plan to seek employment or examine the possibilities of starting your own business
  • be able to support yourself during the time for which you are applying for a residence permit
  • have, or have applied for, a comprehensive health insurance policy that is valid for healthcare in Sweden.

If your passport is about to expire, you should get it renewed as you cannot obtain a permit for longer than your passport is valid.

You can only be granted a residence permit that is valid for 12 months. You cannot be granted a permit for more or less than 12 months. The permit can also not be extended.

Before submitting your application

Check that the information given on the documents you enclose is clear. Important details, such as your name, must be given in the documents. The information in the documents should be as recent as possible. The documents should also be translated into Swedish or English by certified translators, if the contents are in another language. Copies of the original document must always be enclosed with translations of documents.

You must hold a valid passport

Enclose copies of the pages in your passport that show your personal details, photo, signature, passport number, country of issue, period of validity, and whether you have permission to live in countries other than your country of origin. It is important that the whole of the passport page is copied. Numbers and lettering at the very top and bottom of the pages must also be clearly visible. If your passport is about to expire, you should get it renewed as you cannot get a permit for longer than your passport is valid.

You must have completed your higher education in Sweden or another EU country

If you have had a residence permit for higher education, you must have completed a university programme in Sweden, and the programme must have comprised at least two semesters. If you have had a residence permit for mobility studies issued by another EU country, you must have completed at least two semesters in Sweden. Your new application must have been received before the previous permit expires. This applies regardless if the permit was issued by Sweden or another EU country.

Your course of education must have been completed with an approved grade. It is not enough to have completed all compulsory parts of the course without obtaining a pass certificate for the whole course. Completed studies can be shown by an examination certificate, as well as other documents, for example, excerpts from the Ladok Register or certificates from qualified staff at the higher education provider. Excerpts from the Ladok Register need to include a note from your higher education provider that you have completed your education.

You must have completed your research in Sweden or in another EU country

If you have had a residence permit for research, you must have completed your research in Sweden or in another EU country. Your new application must have been received before the previous permit expires. This applies regardless whether the permit was issued by Sweden or another EU country. If you have had a residence permit for research in another EU country, it is required that you spent time in Sweden during the period of the residence permit and conducted a part of your research here.

In order to show that you completed your research, you must submit a confirmation from the research principle that the research has been completed. If you primarily conducted research in another EU country, you must submit a confirmation from the research principal in that country.

You must be able to support yourself

If you have completed your studies, the maintenance requirement for people applying during 2019 is at least SEK 8,370 per month. For applications that are received by the Migration Agency on 1 January 2020 or later the maintenance requirement is at least SEK 8,514 per month.

If you have completed your research, the financial support requirement is SEK 9,700 per month.

You must enclose account statements or other documents showing that you have enough money to support you for the whole period of your application for a residence permit. The account statement must contain details of the balance, the name of the account holder and the currency.

If you have continuous income from employment, you must send a copy of the employment contract and wage specifications.

You must have, or have applied for, a comprehensive healthcare insurance policy

If the total length of your residence permits will be longer than one year, you can be registered with the Civil Registry in Sweden. If you are registered with the Civil Registry you are considered to have a comprehensive healthcare insurance policy that is valid for healthcare in Sweden.

If the total continuous length of your residence permits will be less than one year, you will not be registered with the Civil Registry in Sweden. You must then have, or have applied for, your own healthcare insurance policy. The insurance policy must be valid for the whole period of your stay in Sweden and cover the costs of emergency and other medical care, dental care, as well as hospitalization. It must also cover the costs of transport home on medical grounds.
