Exemption from the requirement of full-time studies for extension
The Swedish Migration Agency has extended the possibility of exemptions from the requirement of full-time studies in higher education. The new rules apply to you who needs to extend your residence permit beyond the regular period of study in order to complete your education.
Upon an extension of a residence permit for studies, a permit is granted for the time required by the studies, normally for full-time studies up to one semester. The new rules mean that it is possible to get an extended permit even if you want to complete studies that do not correspond to full-time studies. (1.5 credits per week count as full-time studies).
The Swedish Migration Agency will then look at whether you previously met the requirement of full-time studies during the period that you had your residence permit. If you have met the requirement, it is possible to also consider your remaining studies to be full-time studies.
An application for an extension of a residence permit must include a study certificate issued by your school, stating that there is a clear plan for you to complete your studies.
