Travelling from Sweden

Temporary or permanent residence permit

A residence permit may be temporary, which means that you may stay in Sweden for a limited period. If you wish to remain in Sweden once the permit expires, you must apply for an extension. It is important to apply before the permit expires.

A permit may also be issued without time limitations, known as a permanent residence permit. This means that you have a right to live and work in Sweden for an unlimited period.

As proof of your residence permit, you will receive a residence permit card. If you have a temporary residence permit, the card is valid for the same period as the permit. If you have a permanent residence permit, the card is valid for five years. After five years you need a new card.

When you travel, you must show the card together with a valid passport.

Your decision documents and your residence permit card state whether you have a temporary or permanent residence permit.

If your residence permit has expired

If your residence permit is no longer valid, you must apply for a new permit if you wish to return to Sweden. You can apply from the country you are living in and the permit must be ready before you travel to Sweden.

Travel with a permanent residence permit

However, if you submit a notification to be allowed to keep your permanent residence permit, you can be away from Sweden for up to two years. Your notification must have reached the Migration Agency no later than one week before you move to another country. If you do not resettle in Sweden within two years, your residence permit may be withdrawn.

If your residence permit has expired

If your residence permit is no longer valid, you must apply for a new permit if you wish to return to Sweden. You must apply at a Swedish embassy or consulate-general in the country you live in. The permit must be ready before you travel to Sweden.

If you have previously had a permanent residence permit and you re-apply for a residence permit because you have previously lived in Sweden, the Swedish Migration Agency looks at your ties to Sweden. The Migration Agency also looks at how long you have been living in Sweden and how long you have lived in other countries. Contact the Swedish embassy or consulate-general for more information on how to apply and what to do if you previously held a permanent residence permit.
