Residence permit after studies

If you have a residence permit for studies at a university or other higher education institution in Sweden and have completed your studies, you can get a residence permit to seek employment or examine the possibilities of starting your own business here. You should apply for a residence permit while you are still in Sweden.

Requirements for obtaining a residence permit

To obtain a residence permit you have to

  • still be in Sweden. Your application may be refused if you have left Sweden after completing your studies
  • hold a passport that is valid for the whole period you intend to be in Sweden
  • have had a residence permit for university college education lasting at least two terms
  • your last residence permit must have been a residence permit for university college studies
  • have completed your studies - this means all of your courses must be completed
  • plan to seek employment or examine the possibilities of starting your own business
  • be able to support yourself during the time for which you are applying for a recidence permit
  • have a comprehensive insurance policy.

If your passport is about to expire, you should get it renewed as you cannot obtain a permit for longer than your passport is valid.

You may get a residence permit that is valid for up to six months.

Before submitting your application

Check that the information given on the documents you enclose is clear. Important details, such as your name, must be given in the documents. The information in the documents should be as recent as possible. The documents should also be translated into Swedish or English by certified translators, if the contents are in another language. Copies of the original document must always be enclosed with translations of documents.

You must hold a valid passport

Enclose copies of the pages in your passport that show your personal details, photo, signature, passport number, country of issue, period of validity, and whether you have permission to live in countries other than your country of origin. It is important that the whole of the passport page is copied. Numbers and lettering at the very top and bottom of the pages must also be clearly visible. If your passport is about to expire, you should get it renewed as you cannot get a permit for longer than your passport is valid.

You must have had a residence permit to study for at least two terms.

You must have completed a university college course in Sweden, and the course must have covered at least two terms. You must also have had a residence permit for a university college course during the period of study, and your new application must have been received in direct relation to the previous permit.

Your course of education must have been completed with an approved grade. It is not enough to have completed all compulsory parts of the course without obtaining a pass certificate for the whole course. Completed studies can be shown by an examination certificate, as well as other documents, for example, excerpts from the Ladok Register or certificates from qualified staff at the place of study.

You must be able to support yourself

The maintenance requirement for people applying before 1 January 2017 is at least SEK 7,974 per month. For applications that are received by the Migration Agency on 1 January 2017 or later the maintenance requirement is at least SEK 8,064 per month.

You must enclose bank statements or other documents showing how you have supported yourself for the last three months and that you have enough money to support you for the whole period of your application for a residence permit. If you have several bank accounts, you must enclose statements from all your accounts. The statement must contain details of the balance, the name of the account holder and the currency. Bank assets must be on an account that belongs to you and from which only you and your husband or wife, if you have one, can withdraw money. If you share the account with, for example, your parents or a relative, the bank assets will not be regarded as your own. Nor does the Migration Agency approve the sponsoring of your support by anyone else (for example, a relative or a company) during your stay in Sweden, if there is no money on your account. Credit, funds or shares are not counted as your own bank assets.

You must have a comprehensive healthcare insurance policy that is valid in Sweden

If the total length of your residence permits will be longer than one year, you can be registered with the Civil Registry in Sweden. If you are registered with the Civil Registry you are considered to have a comprehensive healthcare insurance policy.

If the total length of your residence permits will be less than one year, you will not be registered with the Civil Registry in Sweden. You must then be insured by your country of origin or have your own insurance. The insurance policy must be valid for the whole period of your stay in Sweden and cover the costs of emergency and other medical care, as well as hospitalization. It must also cover the costs of transport home on medical grounds.

When we have received your application

When you have submitted an application for a residence permit, you have the right to remain in Sweden until the Swedish Migration Agency makes a decision on your application or until the decision becomes final.

If you are granted a permit, you will be given a residence permit card. The card is proof that you have permission to remain in Sweden and contains a photo of you and your fingerprints. You should, therefore, book a time to have your photograph and fingerprints taken as soon as possible.

If you have had a residence permit previously

You need to have your photograph and fingerprints taken even if you have had a residence permit previously, as your photograph and fingerprints cannot be saved.

After the decision

If you are granted a residence permit, the decision will be sent to your home address in Sweden, and the residence permit card will be sent to your home within approximately one week.
