How it works

If you are eligible to undergo a digital passport control, we will email you an offer within a few days after you submit your application.

The email will be sent to the email address provided in the e-service. If you are an applicant’s representative with power of attorney, you must forward the email to the person to whom the application applies.

The email contains a personal link to the Digital Passport Check e-service. There you will find a list of the passports included in your application that can be checked digitally.

The link is valid for 7 days

Note that the personal link is only valid for 7 days from the time the email is sent. We cannot send you a new link to the e-service, so this is your only chance to have your passport checked digitally. If you are unable to share your passport information before your personal link expires, you may need to present your passport in person.

Download the Freja app from the App Store, Google Play or Huawei Gallery. The app is free.

The Freja app.

To use the Freja app, you need a phone or tablet with a working camera and an NFC reader. Most phones today have an NFC reader; this is the feature you use, for example, to pay in stores by holding your phone against a reader.

We recommend downloading the Freja app to a separate phone or tablet for each passport that needs to be checked. The Freja app can only manage one passport on each device.

If you want to share multiple passports but only have one phone or tablet, you need to wait for Freja to verify one person’s identity and share that passport. You will then need to delete the app and repeat the process with the next passport.

Launch the Freja app

We recommend turning on notifications for the app.

Enter and confirm an email address, and select a pin code

Take a photo of yourself using the Freja app

Create an identification document by scanning the photo page and chip in the passport

The app will guide you through the process, to ensure that Freja can read all the necessary data. Note that it is the main photo page with the long number code at the bottom that you should scan.

Final check of passport

Prepare for the final check by looking into the camera, so that Freja can verify that the passport you have scanned really belongs to you.

Submit identification document

Your identification document is now added and ready to be sent to Freja for verification. Tap the button in the app to submit.

If you are unable or unwilling to share passport information

If for any reason you are unable or unwilling to scan your passport with Freja, please let us know.

Use your personal link to the Digital Passport Check e-service and reply that you cannot share your passport information in the app or do not wish to do so, so we can start processing your application as soon as possible. If you need to present your passport in person, we will contact you with more details.

Freja’s final security check may take up to 24 hours, but it will be faster on weekdays between 08:00 and 22:00 Swedish time. Once the check is complete, you will receive an email or notification from Freja that your identity has been verified.

If Freja notifies you that your identity could not be verified, please use the Digital Passport Check e-service to inform us as soon as possible that you cannot share your passport information digitally. We can then start processing your application as soon as possible. If you need to present your passport in person, we will contact you with more details.

You can now access the Digital Passport Check e-service via your personal link and share your passport information with the Swedish Migration Agency.

In the e-service you will see a list of the passports that have been registered.

  1. For each passport in the list, you can choose whether or not to share passport information. In the same list, you can also see if any of the passports you entered in your application cannot be checked digitally. This could be because that passport belongs to a person who is not visa-exempt.
  2. Once you have selected “Share passport information”, you will need to open the Freja app on the device with which you scanned the passport in question. In the Freja app, you will now need to approve the sharing of passport information with the Swedish Migration Agency. Once you have done that, you can proceed to share the next passport.

The Swedish Migration Agency can now start processing your application.

If you have been unable or unwilling to share any of the passports in your application, we will contact you by email if you need to book an appointment at a Swedish embassy or Swedish Migration Agency Service Centre to present your passport in person.
