Basis for the permit

Permanent residence permit

The person has the right to work in Sweden. Valid proof is the residence permit card or the decision from the Swedish Migration Agency.

Work (including EU Blue Card, ICT permit, and permit for seasonal employment)

The person has the right to work in Sweden. A permit may be limited to a specific employer and occupation. In that case, the person may only work within that occupation and for the employer stated in the decision from the Swedish Migration Agency.

Au pair

The person has the right to work in Sweden alongside their main work as an au pair. Valid proof is the residence permit card or the decision from the Swedish Migration Agency.

Self-employed

The person only has the right to operate their own business.

Researcher (including mobile researcher)

The person has the right to work in Sweden. Valid proof is the residence permit card or the decision from the Swedish Migration Agency.

Doctoral student or higher education studies (including mobility studies)

The person has the right to work in Sweden. Valid proof is the residence permit card or the decision from the Swedish Migration Agency.

To look for work after completed studies or research in Sweden

The person has the right to work in Sweden. Valid proof is the residence permit card or the decision from the Swedish Migration Agency.

To look for work or start a business after completed second-cycle studies (not in Sweden)

The person does not have the right to work before they have received an employment contract and applied for a work permit.

Traineeship/internship within the context of higher education

The person has the right to work in Sweden alongside their main traineeship/internship. Valid proof is the residence permit card or the decision from the Swedish Migration Agency.

Other studies

The person does not have the right to work.

Long-term resident in another EU country or family member of such a person

The person has the right to work in Sweden as long as the person who is long-term resident has a valid residence permit card from the other EU country. Valid proof is the residence permit card.

If the person with long-term resident status in another EU country has obtained long-term resident status in Sweden, their family members (who have a residence permit as a family member of a person with long-term resident status in another EU country) may work as long as that permit is valid.

Protection under the Temporary Protection Directive

The person has the right to work in Sweden. They can show their residence permit card or the decision letter from the Swedish Migration Agency as proof.

To live with someone in Sweden

The person has the right to work in Sweden. They can show their residence permit card or the decision letter from the Swedish Migration Agency as proof.

To visit Sweden

The person does not have the right to work.

Accompanying family member of an employee, self-employed person, researcher, doctoral student, or higher education student

The person has the right to work in Sweden. They can show their residence permit card or the decision letter from the Swedish Migration Agency as proof.
