Residence permit for the first time (has not had a residence permit before)

The person does not have the right to work during the waiting period. In most cases, the person does not have the right to be in Sweden while waiting for a decision on a first-time residence permit application.

Asylum

The person has the right to work if they have a valid exemption from the work permit requirement (AT-UND). Valid proof is the LMA card.

Extension of a residence and work permit

The person has the right to work during the waiting period if they have had a work permit for at least six months and applied for an extension before the previous permit expired.

If the person applied for an extension after the previous permit expired or has had a permit for less than six months, they do not have the right to work during the waiting period.

Extension of a residence permit as a researcher (including mobile researcher)

The person has the right to work during the waiting period if they applied for an extension before the previous permit expired. If the person applied for an extension after the previous permit expired, they do not have the right to work during the waiting period.

Extension of a residence permit as a doctoral student or higher education student (including mobile studies)

The person has the right to work during the waiting period if they applied for an extension before the previous permit expired. If the person applied for an extension after the previous permit expired, they do not have the right to work during the waiting period.

A new work permit due to a change of job

The person has the right to work during the waiting period if they applied for a new work permit before the previous permit expired. The employment can only start after the application has been submitted. If the person applied for a new work permit after the previous permit expired, they do not have the right to work during the waiting period.
