Increased repatriation grant from 1 January

Effective today, 1 January 2026, the new ordinance on the repatriation grant comes into force, including increased amounts.

Voluntary repatriation means that a person who has a residence permit in Sweden based on protection needs chooses to move back to their home country or to another country where they have the right to reside. The repatriation grant is a financial support designed to facilitate that transition. However, the grant cannot be paid for settlement in any EU/EEA country or Switzerland.

The grant has now been raised to:

  • 350,000 SEK per adult (persons over 18 years)
  • 25,000 SEK per child
  • a maximum of 500,000 SEK for married or cohabiting partners
  • a maximum of 600,000 SEK for a household.

– The new regulation provides stronger support for those who wish to start fresh in their home country or in another country where they are entitled to live. Our focus is on providing clear information and ensuring safe and efficient payment methods for the grant, says Director-General Maria Mindhammar.

Who can apply?

The possibility to receive a repatriation grant applies to individuals residing in Sweden who have held a temporary or permanent residence permit since 12 September 2024, or earlier, according to the grounds specified in the new regulation.
