The Swedish Migration Agency introduces a new logo featuring a heraldic coat of arms

The Swedish Migration Agency is introducing a new logo featuring a heraldic coat of arms. The purpose is to more clearly reflect the Agency's role as Sweden's migration authority and as part of the Swedish state. At the same time, the change marks a new phase in the Agency's mission and its European cooperation under the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. The rollout of the new logo will begin on 1 September and will take place gradually.

– I am proud and delighted to present our new heraldic coat of arms. When people interact with the Swedish Migration Agency, it should be immediately clear that they are dealing with Sweden's official migration authority. The heraldic coat of arms strengthens our connection to the state and enhances clarity and legitimacy, says Director-General Maria Mindhammar.

Responsibility for Sweden's migration and asylum matters

The decision to introduce the new logo, which also includes an English-language wordmark, coincides with the entry into force of the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, bringing a common regulatory framework and closer European cooperation.

– Major changes are taking place in the field of migration that affect both our mission and the context in which we operate. It is therefore natural to mark this development and to make our role as the government agency responsible for Sweden's migration and asylum matters even clearer, says Maria Mindhammar.

Continuity through the arches and the red colour

While the symbol is being renewed, important elements of the Swedish Migration Agency's previous logo have been retained. The red colour and the bridge symbol, which have long formed part of the Agency's visual identity, remain as an integrated part of the coat of arms. The bridge symbol has been used since the former National Immigration Board became the Swedish Migration Agency in 2000. It represents movement in both directions - both immigration and return migration - in accordance with Swedish legislation.

– This is about combining development with continuity. We are keeping the elements that many people associate with the Swedish Migration Agency while strengthening our connection to the Swedish state, says Maria Mindhammar.

Stronger protection of the Agency's identity

Heraldic coats of arms are protected by specific legal provisions and are clearly associated with public authorities.

– This also provides stronger protection against forgery, fraud and the misuse of the Agency's identity, says Maria Mindhammar.

Gradual implementation

The new logo will be introduced starting on 1 September 2026. The rollout will take place gradually across the Swedish Migration Agency's digital and physical channels during the autumn, as existing materials are updated. The change will include websites, e-services, signage, flags and information materials.

The graphic design work on the new logo was carried out entirely in-house by a small project team. The Agency's contracted communications agency was engaged to conduct focus group interviews with an external target audience and to provide limited strategic advice. The cost of the external support amounted to approximately SEK 200,000.

Facts: The heraldic coat of arms

All Swedish government agencies are entitled to use a royal crown and shield as part of their official symbols. The Swedish Migration Agency's coat of arms was developed in consultation with the National Herald Davor Zovko at the Swedish National Archives. As with all heraldic arms, the official design is defined by its blazon (formal heraldic description): Argent, two twin bars Gules formed by arcs, the upper bar tapering towards sinister and the lower bar tapering towards dexter. The shield ensigned with a Royal Crown.
