Asylum seeker

An asylum seeker is a person who has arrived in Sweden and applied for asylum, but who has not yet received a final decision about their application.

The word asylum seeker was valid until 12 June 2026. Thereafter, it is called a person who has applied for international protection (asylum).

The Swedish Migration Agency is responsible for considering applications from people who want to live in Sweden, seek protection or become Swedish citizens. Our work is based on Swedish laws and international conventions, with a focus on legal certainty and effective reception and return.
