Digital passport check

Before you can receive a decision about your application for a residence permit, the Swedish Migration Agency needs to check your passport. Some applicants can have their passport checked digitally, instead of presenting it in person.

In most cases you need valid passport to be granted a residence permit in Sweden. When you submit your application, you must attach copies of your passport, but when the Swedish Migration Agency investigates your application, we also need to check the passport to see that it meets our requirements and that it belongs to you.

The check can either be done in person in connection with an in-person visit to a Swedish embassy or consulate general, at the Swedish Migration Agency or the National Government Service Centre, or in the Digital passport check e-service.

If you meet the requirements for digital passport control, you will receive an email from the Swedish Migration Agency with a personal link to the Digital Passport Control e-service a few days after you have submitted your application.

To undergo the digital passport check, you must meet the following conditions:

  • You have applied for a residence permit to work, study or move to a family member in Sweden.
  • You have applied for a residence permit in the e-service.
  • You have a passport from one of the countries or territories whose passports can be checked in the e-service.
  • You have received an email with a personal link to the Digital passport check e-service.

A passport with a chip (e-passport)
Your passport must be an e-passport type, with a chip that stores your digital passport information. The symbol on the front of the passport indicates that your passport contains a chip.

If your passport does not have this symbol, it cannot be checked digitally and you may need to have it checked in person. We will contact you with more information if you need to book an appointment to show your passport in person.

Access to a mobile phone or tablet

Freja app
Freja is a mobile e-identification service approved by the Swedish authorities. It allows you to scan your passport and share it digitally with the Swedish Migration Agency.

You have received a personal offer via email
If you are eligible for digital passport check, you will receive an offer within a few days of submitting your application.

The email was sent to the email address provided in your on-line application. If you are an applicant’s representative with power of attorney, you must forward the email to the person to whom the application applies.

The email contains a personal link to the Digital passport check e-service. There you will find a list of the passports included in your application that can be checked digitally.

The link is valid for 7 days

Note that the personal link is only valid for 7 days from the time the email is sent. If you are unable to share your passport information before your personal link expires, you may need to present your passport in person.

Download the Freja app

Download the Freja app from the App Store, Google Play or Huawei Gallery. The app is free.

To use the Freja app, you need a phone or tablet with a working camera and an NFC reader. Most phones today have an NFC reader; this is the feature you use, for example, to pay in stores by holding your phone against a reader.

If you have questions about the Freja app, contact Freja’s support External link..

Freja-appen

The app looks like this.

If you are applying together with your family

We recommend downloading the Freja app to a separate phone or tablet for each passport that needs to be checked. The Freja app can only manage one passport on each device at a time.

Children under the age of five are an exception. Their passports can be added to a parent’s app after the parent has shared their own passport.

If you want to share multiple passports but only have one phone or tablet, you need to wait for Freja to verify one person’s identity and share that passport. You will then need to delete the app and repeat the process with the next passport.

Create an account and e-identification

Start the Freja app

We recommend turning on notifications for the app.

Enter and confirm an email address, then select a pin code

Take a photo of yourself using the Freja app

Create an identification document by scanning the photo page and chip in the passport

The app will guide you through the process, to ensure that Freja can read all the necessary data. Note that it is the main photo page with the long number code at the bottom that you should scan.

Rotate your phone when scanning your passport.

Final check of passport

Prepare for the final check by looking into the camera, so that Freja can verify that the passport you have scanned really belongs to you.

Submit identification document

Your identification document is now added and ready to be sent to Freja for verification. Tap the button in the app to submit.

If you are unable or unwilling to share passport information

If for any reason you are unable or unwilling to scan your passport with Freja, please let us know.

Use your personal link to the Digital passport Check e-service and reply that you cannot share your passport information in the app or do not wish to do so, so that we can start processing your application as soon as possible. If you need to present your passport in person, we will contact you with more details.

Wait while Freja verifies your identity

Freja’s final security check may take up to 24 hours, but it will be faster on weekdays between 08:00 and 22:00 Swedish time. Once the check is complete, you will receive an email or notification from Freja that your identity has been verified.

If Freja notifies you that your identity could not be verified, please use the Digital passport check e-service to inform us as soon as possible that you cannot share your passport information digitally. We can then start processing your application as soon as possible. If you need to present your passport in person, we will contact you with more details.

Share your passport information with the Swedish Migration Agency

You can now access the Digital passport check e-service via your personal link and share your passport information with the Swedish Migration Agency.

In the e-service you will see a list of the passports that have been registered.

  1. For each passport in the list, you can choose whether or not to share passport information. In the same list, you can also see if any of the passports you entered in your application cannot be checked digitally. This could be because that passport was not issued by one of the countries or territories included in the e-service.
  2. Once you have selected “Share passport information”, you will need to open the Freja app on the device with which you scanned the passport in question. In the Freja app, you will now need to approve the sharing of passport information with the Swedish Migration Agency. Once you have done that, you can proceed to share the next passport.

If you have been unable or unwilling to share any of the passports in your application, we will contact you by email if you need to book an appointment to show your passport in person.

Here you can see the countries and territories whose passports can be checked in the e-service. The list is sorted in alphabetical order (A-Z).

Yes, your family members can also do a digital passport check if they apply online and have passports from one of the countries or territories listed above.

If your family members apply for a residence permit together with you, they will not receive their own email with a link to the e-service. Instead, they will be included in the offer that is automatically sent to you. You can read further below about what to consider if there are several of you applying at the same time.

If your partner applies as a co-applicant after you have received a decision on a residence permit for work or study, they will receive an email with a link to the e-service for digital passport check a few days after their own online application.

You can only check one passport at a time with the Freja app. We recommend that you use a separate mobile phone or tablet for each passport you want to share. If you do not have several phones or tablets, you have two options:

Option 1: Borrow a mobile phone

You need to have access to the mobile phone until

  • Freja has verified the identity of your co-applicant(s)
  • you have shared your passport information with the Swedish Migration Agency.

Once you are finished, you can delete the Freja app from the phone you borrowed. No passport information will be stored on the phone.

Option 2: Use the same phone repeatedly

You can use the same phone to control multiple passes. You will then need to delete the app and start over after sharing each pass.

It may take up to 24 hours for Freja to confirm that your identity has been verified. Only after this can you share your passport information with the Swedish Migration Agency. The link you receive in the email will work for 7 days. This means that if you know that you want to use the same device to check multiple passports, you should start the process as soon as possible.

You can be offered the option of using the Digital passport control e-service for your co-applicant children under the age of 5 as well. Children do not need to have their own app. Instead, you will receive an offer to add their passport to your own app when you share your passport information in the e-service.

Since the Swedish Migration Agency does not require identity checks of co-applicant children under the age of 5, but only wants to see that a child has a valid passport, it is enough to simply scan the child’s passport in your app. This means that you do not need to photograph the child and wait for Freja to verify the child’s identity.

Co-applicant children who have reached the age of 5

If a child has reached the age of 5 by the time you are asked to share their passport information with the Swedish Migration Agency, the child will need their own Freja app. You can see in the Digital passport check e-service which children can be added to their parent’s app.

Email us or call us at +46 771 235 235, and we will send you a new offer with a new personal link to the Digital passport check e-service.

Use your personal link to the Digital passport check e-service to let us know that you do not want to share your passport information, so that we can continue to process your application correctly.

We will contact you if you need to book an appointment to have your passport checked in person.

Using the Freja app to share your passport with the Swedish Migration Agency is a first step in creating a full e-ID in Freja on which other Swedish authorities can rely.

To create a full e-ID in Freja, you need to register with the Swedish Tax Agency and apply for a personal identity number or coordination number. Once you have received a residence permit and set a date for your move to Sweden, you can use the Freja app to notify the Swedish Tax Agency of your move, and thus start your application for a personal identity number or coordination number.

Read more and notify the Swedish Tax Agency of your move to Sweden External link.

Freja eID is a secure e-identification solution approved by the Swedish authorities. Freja will not share your passport information without your consent.

If Freja is unable to verify your identity, you may need to have your passport checked in person.

Use your personal link to the Digital passport check e-service to let us know that you cannot share your passport information, so that we can process your application as soon as possible.

We will contact you if you need to book an appointment to have your passport checked at a Swedish embassy or consulate general, or at the Swedish Migration Agency or the National Government Service Centre in Sweden.

The Digital passport check e-service should include a list of all passports included in your application, even those that cannot be checked digitally.

Passports that may need to be checked in person

At the moment, the automated system cannot identify alien’s passports or diplomatic passports.

If any of your family members have such a passport, they will not be included in the e-service, and the passport cannot be checked digitally. They will be informed if they must present their passport in person. The other applicants are welcome to use the e-service to share their passport information digitally.
