Embassies responsible for migration matters

There are Swedish embassies and consulates-general in many countries, but not all of them handle migration matters. Therefore, it is important that you find out where to turn if you receive a request from the Swedish Migration Agency to contact a Swedish embassy or consulate-general.

Residence permits and work permits

You may receive a request from the Swedish Migration Agency to

  • book an interview
  • provide fingerprints and be photographed
  • show your passport for verification
  • collect a residence permit card.

In that case, you should contact a Swedish embassy or consulate-general in the country/territory where you live or are a citizen.

If you live in a country/territory where there is no Swedish embassy or consulate-general, you should instead contact a Swedish embassy or consulate-general in another country/territory. In some locations, you can be interviewed via video link. In that case, you visit the embassy or consulate-general in that location, but another embassy will be responsible for your application and will be able to answer your questions. Here you can find out where to turn:

Schengen visa

In many countries, Sweden has an agreement with an external service provider, VFS Global, which receives applications for Schengen visas. In some countries, you must submit your application to a Swedish embassy or consulate-general. In a number of countries, Sweden is represented by another Schengen country, and it is then that country’s embassy or consulate-general that receives and processes your application.
