Person eligible for subsidiary protection

A person in need of subsidiary protection is someone who has applied for internationel protection (asylum) and have been granted this because they are at risk of being punished with death or subjected to corporal punishment, torture or other inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment in their country of origin, or because they are a civilian at high risk of being injured due to armed conflict.

In Swedish, the concept eligible for subsidiary protection was previously called “alternativt skyddsbehövande”. From 12 June 2026 it is called “subsidiärt skyddsbehövande”.
