By logging in to My Page, you can access information about your application and use our services.

In some cases, you need a passport to be granted a residence permit. In these cases, the Swedish Migration Agency needs to check your passport before a decision can be made. If you need to present your passport, we will contact you with information about how and when you can do so.

In some cases, you will not be required to present your passport. For example, if we have already checked your passport at a previous visit, we do not need to do so again.

Not everyone who has applied for a residence permit extension needs to visit the Swedish Migration Agency for an interview. We may need to see you to ask questions, for example, if you wrote in your application that you have new grounds for asylum. We may also ask questions over the phone or ask you to submit additional information by letter.

We will contact you if we need more information.

You should not leave Sweden while you are waiting for a decision. If you are in need of protection, the Swedish Migration Agency cannot grant your application if you are abroad when we make a decision. It may also be difficult for you to return to Sweden if your current permit expires while you are abroad, as you must have a valid residence permit to return to Sweden.

Once you have submitted an application for an extension, you have the right to continue working or studying, as long as you applied for an extension before your current permit expired. If you applied too late, you do not have the right to work while you wait.

It is impossible to say how long it will take for you to receive a decision.

Once we have made our decision, we usually send it by post to your registered address, via a process known as “simplified service”. In some cases, we will summon you to a meeting at the Swedish Migration Agency, where you will be informed of the decision.

If you have applied for a residence permit extension for your child, we will send the decision to the child’s registered address. Parents/legal guardians can change their child’s registered address by contacting the Swedish Tax Agency.

If you change your address

When sending letters and summons to your home, the Swedish Migration Agency will primarily use your registered address, which we will get from the Swedish Tax Agency. Therefore, it is important that you notify the Swedish Tax Agency if you move. The Swedish Migration Agency cannot change your registered address.

You can withdraw (take back) your application at any time while your case is being processed. Once you have withdrawn your application, you will receive a decision informing you that your application has been written off. In connection with this, you will also receive an expulsion decision, if you are still in Sweden. This means that you must leave the territory of the EU Member States and the Schengen area.

You can withdraw your application by sending us a message when you are logged in to Min sida [My Page], or by sending a letter to the Swedish Migration Agency.

In this message or letter, you must tell us that you want to withdraw your application. You will also need to provide your name, date of birth or personal identity number, case number, telephone number, and address. If you send us a letter, sign it with your signature.

If you have given someone power of attorney, that person may withdraw your application on your behalf.
