You have received a decision If your application has been approved – studies

Your application for a residence permit to study in Sweden, or as a family member of a student, has been approved. The information on this page applies to both those who have been granted a permit for the first time and those who have been granted an extended permit for studies.

Once you have been granted a residence permit, you will get a residence permit card. This card is proof that you have permission to be in Sweden. You need to be photographed and fingerprinted for the card, unless you already did this when you applied or when you presented your passport. If you have family members who have applied with you, they must also be photographed and fingerprinted.

You need to be photographed and fingerprinted for your residence permit card, if you have not already done so. When you should do so depends on whether you need an entry visa to travel to Sweden.

If you need an entry visa to travel to Sweden, you must get fingerprinted and photographed at an embassy or consulate-general and then wait for your residence permit card to be ready before you can travel to Sweden. When you visit the embassy, you must bring your passport with you.

When you travel to Sweden, you must present your residence permit card together with a valid passport.

If you do not need an entry visa to travel to Sweden, you can get fingerprinted and photographed after you have arrived in Sweden.

Book an appointment for your visit

You need to be photographed and fingerprinted for your residence permit card. You must do this even if you have had a Swedish residence permit before, because this information is not saved.

If you are outside Sweden, you can pick up your residence permit card at the embassy. If you are listed in the Swedish population register, it will be sent to your registered address in Sweden.

If you are granted a residence permit for more than one year, you should contact the Swedish Tax Agency to get listed in Sweden’s population register and receive a Swedish personal identity number. If you need to seek care in Sweden, you may have to pay for it yourself if you are not registered in the population register and don’t have a Swedish personal identity number. In some cases, you can register in the Swedish Population Register even if your stay in Sweden is shorter than one year.

About Sweden – for new arrivals

Information for children who have been granted permission to live in Sweden

If you have been granted a residence permit to study, your family can apply for a residence permit to live with you in Sweden.

You want to apply – Family who want to apply afterwards

During the period in which your permit is valid, you can travel in and out of the country. However, if you leave Sweden, you must have both a valid passport and your residence permit card to be able to return here.

You can keep your residence permit for studies in Sweden even if you will be spending time in another country during part of the permit period, as long as the stay abroad is part of the education to which you have been admitted in Sweden. If you will be travelling to another country as part of your education, you should contact that country’s authorities to find out what is required to stay in that country.

Yes, in certain situations, the Swedish Migration Agency can revoke a permit. For example, this applies in these cases:

  • if you provided incorrect information in your application or did not tell us about something of significance to your residence permit
  • if you are studying at bachelor's or master's level and work more than 15 hours per week during the academic term. Work that is part of your education or carried out at the higher education institution where you study is not included. This includes, for example, teaching, student representation, administration, internships, research, and artistic research.
  • if the conditions for the residence permit are no longer met; for example, if you are no longer studying.

If you have been granted a permanent residence permit for doctoral students, you can find more information on the page You have received a decision – Permanent residence permit.

If you are studying at bachelor's or master's level, you may work a maximum of 15 hours per week in Sweden. This applies if your residence permit was granted on or after 11 June 2026.

Your residence permit may be withdrawn if you work more than 15 hours per week. Your application for an extended residence permit may also be refused if you have worked more than 15 hours per week.

You may work more than 15 hours per week if the work:

  • is part of your education (for example, an internship)
  • involves student representation, administration, or research at the higher education institution where you study
  • involves artistic research at the institution
  • takes place during June, July, or August

You may also work more than 15 hours per week during the remaining validity period of your permit if you have completed higher education equivalent to at least two semesters and are not applying for a new residence permit for studies below doctoral level.

If you are studying at bachelor’s or master’s level, you must notify the Swedish Migration Agency of the address where you will live in Sweden during the validity of your permit. This also applies if you have a residence permit to look for work or to explore opportunities to start your own business in Sweden after previously holding a residence permit for bachelor’s or master’s level studies. This requirement applies if your residence permit was granted on or after 11 June 2026.

You do not need to notify the Swedish Migration Agency of your address if you are registered in the Swedish Population Register. The Swedish Tax Agency is responsible for population registration. If your residence permit is valid for at least one year, you can register in the Swedish Population Register. The Swedish Migration Agency will then receive your address from the Swedish Tax Agency. In some cases, you can register even if your stay is shorter than one year.

If your higher education institution uses Ladok for Students (LFS) and you are not an exchange student, you can register your address there. The Swedish Migration Agency will then obtain the information from Ladok. If your institution does not use Ladok for Students, or if you are an exchange student, you must notify the Swedish Migration Agency of your address by telephone. Instructions and contact details can be found under “Additional information” (Upplysningar) in your decision.

If you are outside Sweden, you must notify the Swedish Migration Agency of your address within 30 days of entering Sweden with your residence permit. If you are already in Sweden, you must notify the Swedish Migration Agency within 30 days of the date your permit is granted.

If you move after you have notified your address, you must inform the Swedish Migration Agency of your new address within 30 days of moving. If you are registered in the Swedish Population Register, you should instead report your move to the Swedish Tax Agency.

More Afghans may be able to receive passports from their home country

The Swedish Migration Agency estimates that Afghan authorities are now able to issue national passports to their citizens within a reasonable time. This means that Afghan citizens with a residence permit in Sweden no longer automatically have the right to an alien’s passport. Instead, the Swedish Migration Agency will review each application for an alien’s passport individually.
