Important changes for people applying for Swedish citizenship
New measures are being introduced to improve security in Swedish citizenship cases. The new measures also affect people who have already applied and are waiting for a decision.
Your application or notification to become a Swedish citizen has been approved.
Once you have become a Swedish citizen, you will receive a citizenship certificate. The Swedish Migration Agency informs the Swedish Tax Agency that you have become a Swedish citizen.
When you become a Swedish citizen, your residence permit card is automatically blocked, which means that you can no longer use it to show that you have the right to be in Sweden.
Swedish citizens are not required to have a Swedish passport or ID card. If you need a Swedish passport, you can apply for one from the police.
Read more about Swedish passports on the website of the Swedish Police External link.
If you have submitted original documents to us, we will send them back to you within three weeks.
A Swedish citizen who is or has been a resident of Sweden cannot have their citizenship taken away.
If you have become a Swedish citizen and still have your previous citizenship, you have rights and obligations to that country as well.
