Important to know

If you have a residence permit in Sweden, you can in some cases apply for an alien’s passport.

If you are a refugee or a stateless person, you can apply for a travel document instead of an alien’s passport.

If you are in Sweden but need to travel to another country to arrange for a new national passport, you can apply for an emergency alien’s passport.

You want to apply – Emergency alien’s passports 

  • You have a residence permit in Sweden because you have grounds for protection from the national authorities in your country of origin, and this makes it impossible for you to travel there to get a passport.
  • You are a citizen of a country whose passports are not approved in Sweden.

You must attach these documents to the application. Make sure that the information on your submitted documents is clearly visible.

Any previously issued alien's passport
If you have a previously issued alien's passport, you must return it to the Swedish Migration Agency. If you need to use the passport while you are waiting for your new one, you can first send us a copy of the passport. You must then send us the original passport when we notify you.

Consent for the Swedish Migration Agency to issue a passport to a child under the age of 18
If the application concerns a child under the age of 18, their parent/legal guardian must approve the child’s application by attaching a consent form. If your child has two parents/legal guardians, both must approve the child’s application and their signatures must be witnessed.

Copy of a document proving your appointment as a child’s representative or guardian, as well as a copy of your ID card, if you are applying on behalf of a child in this capacity
If you are applying as the representative or guardian of a child under the age of 18.

An adult must submit the child’s application

It is a child’s parent/legal guardian, representative or guardian who applies for an alien’s passport for the child.

You cannot be granted an alien’s passport if

  • you are a Swedish citizen or EU/EEA citizen
  • you have a valid national passport or can arrange to get a new national passport
  • you are currently in your country of origin.

If you have been granted a residence permit based on grounds for protection that are not related to the national authorities in your country of origin (for example, due to honour issues, natural disasters, or the general situation in your country of origin) the main rule is that you do not have the right to an alien’s passport. In that case, you should instead contact the national authorities of your country of origin to get a passport. However, there are exceptions for certain countries. Contact the Swedish Migration Agency for more information.

An alien's passport is valid for a maximum of three years and cannot be extended. If you need an alien’s passport after the old one has expired, you can apply for a new one.

It is not possible to say exactly how long you will need to wait for a decision. There are many things that affect the waiting time, for example whether your application is complete to begin with or whether we need to request more information, or whether we need to check with other authorities when investigating your case.

You will not receive a refund if your application is rejected.

Children under the age of 18 cannot apply for an alien’s passport themselves. It is a child’s parent/legal guardian, representative or guardian who applies for an alien’s passport for the child.

If you have become a Swedish citizen, you should contact the police to apply for a Swedish passport.

An alien’s passport meets the EU’s passport requirements and can be used for travel to most countries. Some countries may require you to have an entry visa. Before you travel, contact the embassy of the country in question for more information.

If you have been granted a residence permit based on grounds for protection, your alien’s passport will state that you cannot travel to your country of origin or the country from which you fled.

If you have been unable to prove your identity, your alien’s passport will state that your identity has not been proven. This may make it more difficult to travel to certain countries.

If you lose your alien’s passport or if it is stolen, you should report this to the police. If you need a new alien’s passport, you must submit a new application. Attach a copy of the police report when you apply for a new alien’s passport.

If you have lost your alien’s passport or if it is suspected that the passport has been misused, the Swedish Migration Agency may decide on restrictions on the passport’s period of validity and/or area of validity.
