You can be granted an emergency alien’s passport if you have a particularly pressing and urgent need to travel to or from Sweden and cannot get an ordinary alien’s passport, travel document, or national passport. An emergency alien’s passport is a temporary passport that is only valid for a short period and for a one-way or return trip. If you can obtain a temporary travel document from the national authorities in your country of origin, you should contact them first.

The Swedish Migration Agency grants emergency alien’s passports on a restrictive basis, and it is up to you to prove that you cannot obtain any other travel document.

  • You cannot apply for a national passport or another acceptable travel document from your country of origin in Sweden, and would instead need to travel to another country to apply for a passport.
  • You need to travel abroad quickly on a very urgent matter, but do not have a national passport and are unable to arrange for a temporary passport from your country of origin.
  • You have a residence permit in Sweden and are abroad (but not in your country of origin) and have lost your alien’s passport or travel document, and you need a passport to be able to travel back to Sweden.

You must attach these documents to the application. Make sure that the information on your submitted documents is clearly visible.

Consent for the Swedish Migration Agency to issue a passport to a child under the age of 18
If the application concerns a child under the age of 18, their parent/legal guardian must approve the child’s application by attaching a consent form. If your child has two parents/legal guardians, both must approve the child’s application and their signatures must be witnessed.

If you are applying for an emergency alien’s passport because you have lost your alien’s passport or travel document.

Travel itinerary for when, where and how you plan to obtain a national passport from outside Sweden
If you are applying for an emergency alien’s passport in order to travel to your country of origin or another country in order to apply for a national passport, you must submit a concrete travel itinerary and documents showing that you have made the necessary arrangements, such as a passport application appointment. You do not need to have purchased a ticket for the trip; you only need to lay out your travel plans.

Documents that prove your reasons for making a very urgent trip
If you are applying for an emergency alien’s passport in order to travel abroad on a very urgent matter, you must justify and show the Swedish Migration Agency why you need an alien’s passport right now, and why you cannot get a national passport or emergency travel document from the national authorities in your country of origin, for example via an embassy or consulate.

An adult must submit the child’s application

It is a child’s parent/legal guardian or guardian who applies for an emergency alien’s passport for the child.

Holiday trips and trips to visit friends and family are not usually sufficient grounds for being granted an emergency alien’s passport.

Even if you have applied for an alien’s passport or travel document and are waiting for a decision, you must show that you have strong enough reasons to be granted an emergency alien’s passport while waiting for that decision.

In most cases, an emergency alien’s passport is valid for a maximum of seven months. The passport may also be limited to a one-way trip to or from Sweden, or to a single return trip. After your trip, you must return the emergency alien’s passport to the Swedish Migration Agency or to a Swedish embassy or consulate-general.

Since an application for an emergency alien’s passport is often made in preparation for an urgent trip, we process these applications promptly. However, there are many things that can affect the waiting time. This applies in particular if your application is complete from the beginning or if we need to ask you for additional information. If your application is complete, you will receive a decision promptly.

Children under the age of 18 cannot apply for an emergency alien’s passport themselves. It is a child’s parent/legal guardian or guardian who applies for an emergency alien’s passport for the child.

An emergency alien’s passport meets the EU’s passport requirements and can be used for travel to most countries. Some countries may require you to have an entry visa. Before you travel, contact the embassy of the country in question for more information.

If you have been unable to prove your identity, your emergency alien’s passport will state that your identity has not been proven. This may make it more difficult to travel to certain countries.

If you lose your emergency alien’s passport or if it is stolen, you should report this to the police. If you need a new emergency alien’s passport, you must submit a new application. Bring a copy of the police report when you apply for a new emergency alien’s passport.
