LMA cards not valid from 1 October
All LMA cards for asylum seekers must be replaced by application cards at the latest by 1 October 2026. If you have an LMA card, this means that you need to exchange it for an application card.
You want to apply Repatriation grant
If you have a residence permit for protection reasons, and have now decided to move from Sweden, you can apply for a special type of financial grant from the Swedish Migration Agency. It is called a repatriation grant. The grant may also cover the close relatives of someone who has been granted a residence permit for protection reasons.

No permanent residence permits for former asylum seekers from 12 July
From the 12 July, people who have a permit in Sweden on the grounds of protection cannot be granted a permanent residence permit (PUT).

Exemptions from the requirement for a permanent residence permit to obtain Swedish citizenship
From 12 July, as a general rule, permanent residence permits will no longer be granted. Consequently, some people with temporary residence permits may apply for Swedish citizenship without having a permanent residence permit.

On 12 June 2026, the EU's Pact on migration and asylum is introduced. Among other things, this means that the EU will have common rules about how migrants will be controlled at the border, and what the procedure is when somebody applies for international protection (asylum).

New levels of reintegration assistance from 1 June 2026
The EU Reintegration Programme (EURP) provides support for people returning to their country of origin after their application for asylum has been rejected or when they no longer have the right to remain in the EU. The levels of assistance available under the programme are now being revised.
